After Daniel Mytens (c. 1590-1647)
Charles I (1600-49) c. 1627-30
-
Charles I is depicted wearing a crimson slashed doublet and lace edged falling ruff. Around his neck is the Lesser George on a blue ribbon. His hair is worn longer on the sitter's left hand side in a lovelock. Although formerly attributed to Cornelius Johnson, this canvas seems to be a derivation of a standard portrait of the King by Mytens, perhaps of the same type as RCIN 404448.
Provenance
Presented to George IV, when Prince of Wales, by Sir William Scott, later Lord Stowell; recorded in Store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 375) and 1819 (no 420) as Cornelius Johnson; in Windsor Castle in 1858 (Room 257)
