A saddled bay racehorse, facing right, is held by groom with whip in right hand, at his feet is a horse's rug in the Prince of Wales's colours bearing the Prince of Wales' feathers, and another saddle; a racecourse beyond.
Presumably commissioned by the Prince of Wales to celebrate Florizel II's considerable racing success in 1895. This appears to be the first of Adam's commissions to record the Prince's winning racehorses. The frame is by Radspieler & Co. of Munich where Adam had his studio at that time. A study in pencil and white chalk, showing Florizel II facing right, signed and dated 1895, is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 450838). A preparatory sketch, signed and dated 1895, showing both Florizel II and his groom, is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 452817). The backboard to this sketch is inscribed '7 11 1895', which suggests a possible delivery date prior to the Prince of Wales's birthday.
Foaled in 1891, Florizel II by St Simon out of Perdita II was considered coarse, plain and backward. He was however, good-tempered. He won five races in 1894, and was watched by the Prince of Wales at Newmarket in October. In 1895 he won six out of his seven races, including the Goodwood Cup and the Jockey Club Stakes; in addition he brought in the not inconsiderable sum of £4,359 in prize money. In 1896, Florizel II developed ligament problems and was retired to the Sandringham Stud as a stallion.Provenance
