Sophia Dorothea (1687-1757), Queen of Prussia c. 1750-1800
-
Sophia Dorothea, only daughter of George I, married, in 1706, her first cousin, Frederick William I, King of Prussia, by whom she had 14 children. Their eldest surviving son succeeded his father as Frederick II, 'The Great', King of Prussia.
The portrait is tentatively attributed to Georg von Knobelsdorff after a work by Antoine Pesne. Knobelsdorff, a pupil of Pesne, is better known as Frederick the Great’s architect and interior decorator. Depicted wearing a blue dress with silver embroidery at the bosom, cuffs and waist, lace at the neck also; red, ermine-lined mantle about arms; grey hair worn up, and no jewellery.
A similar portrait of the sitter is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 406638).
