Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) was the fifth daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1870. Queen Victoria wrote in her Journal in July 1869 that she 'looked at Sant's very successful pictures of Leopold & Beatrice'. Leopold's portrait is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 404258).

Painted for Queen Victoria; sent from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace on 12 March 1874; recorded there in the Queen's Bedroom in 1876
