Prince Leopold (1853–84), was the fourth and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A scholarly child, he attended Christ Church College in Oxford. He was a haemophiliac, suffered from epilepsy and died at the age of 31. The Prince wears the ribbon and star of the Garter. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1870. Queen Victoria wrote in her Journal in July 1869 that she ‘looked at Sant’s very successful pictures of Leopold & Beatrice’. Beatrice’s portrait is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 404297). Signed with the monogram: 'JS.' Inscribed on the stretcher: '3.Jas: Sant.'

Painted for Queen Victoria; sent from Windsor Castle to Buckingham Palace on 12 March 1874; recorded there in the Queen's Bedroom in 1876
