Frederick II, King of Prussia (1712-1786) c.1745-90

Morier was a Swiss military and sporting painter who started working for William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65) in 1747, when he painted a series of pictures of troops under his command. From 1752 until 1764 he was employed as ‘limner’ (painter) to the Duke on an annual salary of £100; his name also appears regularly in Royal accounts from 1764 to 1767. Full-length, mounted on a rearing bay horse, facing in profile slightly to the left, head turned three-quarters to the left; he is wearing a black coat, cream breeches, black boots and tasseled sash around waist; cavalry battle takes place behind.

Acquired by George IV in 1818; listed in store at Carlton House in 1816 (no 543) and 1819 (no 358); taken to Wndsor Castle in 1823; in the Passage by Edward III's Tower there in 1858
