The painting shows a view of the castle on the Ayrshire coast in Scotland, half-way between Ayr and the Heads of Ayr. Sir Walter Scott's short play, An Ayrshire Tragedy, is said to be based on a murder that took place here in the 17th century.
On the back is a contemporary label giving the artist's address and the subject. -
