Leopold V was the younger brother of the Emperor Ferdinand II; though not actually ordained, he became Bishop of Strasbourg in 1607. In 1626 he renounced his ecclesiastical positions to become the Archduke of Further Austria and to marry Claudia de’ Medici.
This portrait is first listed in the collection in the Private Closet of Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 631), described as ‘Portrait of the Archduke Leopold of Austria. Dated 1610, Canvas 1ft 11in x 1ft 5in Curious’.
The sitter is wearing a dark jerkin with the gold chain of an Order attached to a ribbon around his neck; brown hair, blue eyes, slight moustache.Inscribed: LEOPOLDVS. ARCH. / AUSTRIAE. A: 1610
