On a bare hillside a fierce cavalry engagement is underway, with dead and wounded soldiers in the foreground, left; to the right is a pool and some trees, in the middle ground, left, Prussian reinforcements brought up from the valley; in the distance further reinforcements are visible This painting was probably acquired as a pair with RCIN 401324. Wilhelm Kobell (1766-1855) was taught by his father Ferdinand and also studied in Mannheim and Düsseldorf. In 1792 he was appointed court painter to Electoral Prince Carl Theodor, and in 1808 he became a professor at the Academy in Munich. During this period he produced a series of paintings representing the noble deeds of the Bavarian army during the Napoleonic Wars, under the command of Crown Prince Ludwig, in which he made a particular feature of the landscapes. In 1816, he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit by Maximilian I Joseph, the King of Bavaria.
