This is a copy of the portrait (RCIN 400569) painted for Leopold I, King of the Belgians, in 1833. In November 1865 Queen Victoria wrote to Leopold I, just a few days before his death: 'I have a favour to ask ? it is that you will permit me to have a Copy made of that Picture of me by Hayter ? it is at Brussels. I think a Copy of it ought to exist here'.
The Princess is in evening dress, holding a rose, near a table with books and a globe. At her feet is a spaniel, probably Dash. When Dash died his epitaph read: 'His attachment was without selfishness, His playfulness without malice, His fidelity without deceit. READER, if you would live beloved and die regretted, profit by the example of DASH'Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria by Leopold II, King of the Belgians; recorded in the Princesses' (now Principal) Corridor at Buckingham Palace in 1868
