This is a preliminary sketch for the two calves at the front of a larger painting of Highland Cattle in the Pass of Levy (RCIN 403647). On one occasion when she went through the Pass Queen Victoria noted that she had seen 'endless droves of wild-looking, and for the most part extremely small, shaggy Highland cattle with their drovers and dogs ? most wild and picturesque'.

Painted for Queen Victoria in 1873; recorded at Windsor Castle in 1878
