Jan van Belcamp (1610-53)
Louis XIII (1601-1643) 1636
-
This picture may be one associated with a warrant dating from 13 January 1636 to pay £300 to Belcamp for his services and expenses on a visit to France at Charles I's command, in order to paint for the King portraits of Louis XIII and his Queen. It seems likely that Belcamp copied existing portraits and did not have a sitting from Louis XIII himself. Versions of the portrait which Belcamp may have copied include one in the Devonshire collection (attributed to Ferdinand Elle) and another full length at Holdenby. The painting appears to have been cut down, perhaps to fit over the chimney in the Prince of Wales's Presence Chamber at Hampton Court where it was hanging in the eighteenth century.
Provenance
Probably painted for Charles I; valued at £15 in the Commonwealth Sale in the Armory at St James's Palace (no 14), reserved for Cromwell; after the Restoration listed in the Queen's Gallery at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 18)
