Head and shoulders of Alexandra, Princess of Wales, facing three-quarters to the left, in a dark grey dress with lace trimming. She wears a black velvet choker with a pearl and diamond brooch with a pendant pearl, and a similar diamond and pearl jewel with a pendant pearl in her hair.
This is a copy by Geyling after an original portrait by Baron Von Angeli also is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 401533). This in turn was a preparatory portrait study for the larger family portrait made for Queen Victoria in 1876 (RCIN 402328).
It is inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and the sitter and the date, 1875. The Queen wrote to the Prince of Wales on 31 December 1875: 'I have got the Copy of her Picture (the head merely by Angeli) it really is quite striking! It is standing before me now.' Geyling was paid £30 3s for the copy on 17 February 1876.Provenance
