This is one of a group of five studies, some in watercolour and some in oil, which the Princess Royal gave to Algernon Graves, a distinguished writer on art, to sell. The money raised was to go to one of the charities in Germany which the Princess supported. The painting depicts the palace of Sanssouci in the background.
