The Adoration of the Kings c.1520-50
Oil on panel | 98.7 x 70.0 x 0.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403955
-
The Virgin Mary is seated beneath a red canopy; a mirror hangs behind her. Two kings offer their gfts to the Christ Child who is seated on her lap, leaning out towards them. Because one of the three kings is missing, it is thought that this might have once been the central section of a triptych, the wings of which are now lost. It was common in 16th-century Flemish paintings to depict two kings in the central panel, and the third king on one of the altarpiece wings, with St Joseph on the other.
Provenance
One of the group of early Flemish works from the 77 paintings belonging to Prince Ludwig von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1791-1870), which were first offered to Prince Albert in 1847 as security for a loan and came into his possession by default (no 62 in Waagen’s catalogue of 1854); 25 of them were accepted by the National Gallery in 1863
