A Hermit in a Grotto
-
This is a copy of a painting by Gerrit Dou, autograph versions of which are in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich, and the Wallace Collection, London. In front of arched cavern, a grey-bearded hermit kneels before a desk, cut from the rock, on which sits an open book, hour-glass, cask with candleholder and skull. A lantern hangs from a tree on the left and a crucifix beyond.
