Richard Lauchert had married Amalia, daughter of Francis Joseph, Prince of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfurst. When Lauchert died in 1869 many of Amalia's relatives offered assistance and Queen Victoria granted her a small annual pension. Shortly after her husband's death, Amalia gave this portrait to the Queen. Victoria, Crown Princess of Prussia, Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, wrote to her mother that there were 'heaps' of unfinished portraits left in Lauchert's studio and hoped the Queen would like this portrait as she knew Baroness von Ploetz.
The Baroness is shown wearing a white dress trimmmed with pink edging; her long blonde hair is crowned with a laurel wreath.
