Princess Alice had been at Balmoral in Scotland during the autumn of 1865 and during her visit had ridden ponies up the mountains and spent time sketching with Queen Victoria. On one occasion the Queen had gone up 'a very narrow, rocky, and precipitous glen, called the Sluggan, said to mean the "swallow" or "swallowing" '.
This view is taken from a point in Gleann an t-Slugain on the way up into the Grampians from Invercauld, looking back towards the mountain of Lochnagar.
