Portrait of Elizabeth, the Marchioness of Douro, half-length, standing before a parapet in profile to the right, with her head turned half right; she holds around her a plain white shawl leaving her shoulders and neck bare. Her dark hair is centre-parted, plaited over the top, and gathered at the nape with red roses. Lady Elizabeth Hay (1820-1904) was the daughter of the 8th Marquess of Tweeddale. In 1839 she married Arthur, Marquess of Douro and later 2nd Duke of Wellington. She was Lady of the Bedchamber from 1843 to 1858, and Mistress of the Robes from 1861 to 1868, and from 1874 to 1880. The Royal Collection has an identical version of this painting after the portrait by Robert Thorburn; RCIN 400611.
