Sir Jaswantsinghji Fatehsinghji was a member of the Jhala Rajput family and brother of the Maharao of Cutch, whose portrait is also in the Royal Collection (OM 295). He completed his education in England and in 1884 was appointed a member of the Legislative Council of Bombay (Mumbai). He was in England in 1887 as one of the representatives of the Princes of Western India and he was received by the Queen. He visited the USA and Canada as well as the United Kingdom and was an able and careful ruler. Here he is depicted in Durbar (Court) dress with the Jubilee Medal and the badge of the Order of the Indian Empire. Signed and dated: SP Hall / 1887.
