This is one of several Highland views for which the landscape painter Samuel John Barnes received payment from Queen Victoria. In the last quarter of 1891 the Queen’s personal expenditure included payments to Barnes of £52 10s for ‘4. Pictures of Deeside’. There was some confusion over the price which the Queen was to pay for the four pictures she had chosen, and she eventually consented to take them at £15 each.
