Head and shoulders portrait of Sultan Shahjahan Begum in the robes and insignia of the Order of the Star of India; she wears an elaborately chased gold headdress; her mantle is decorated with the badge of the Imperial Order of the Crown of India.
This head and shoulders portrait probably represents Sultan Shahjahan Begum (1838 –1901) who ruled the Indian state of Bhopal, now part of Madhya Pradesh, from 1844 to 1860 (her mother acting as regent), and then from 1868 to 1901. In 1872 she was made a Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India. Upon her death her daughter, Sultan Kaikhusrau Jahan, assumed the throne. The portrait is probably after an earlier photograph.
A pair with RCIN 403696Provenance
First recorded at Buckingham Palace, c. 1911, later at Osborne where it probably hung as a pair with the portrait of Sultan Kaikhusrau Jahan
