Hermann was Franz Xaver’s younger brother and assistant as well as a painter in his own right, who had studied in Munich and Rome. Princess Charlotte (1840-1927) was the only daughter of Leopold, King of the Belgians. She was lively, attractive and intelligent as a child, adored by her father and much loved by her English relatives. In 1857 she married the Archduke Ferdinand-Maximilian of Austria. He was created Emperor of Mexico in 1864 but was executed in 1867. After her husband’s death Charlotte lived in seclusion in Belgium. Inscribed on the back with the names of the artist and sitter and the date, 1848.

Given to Queen Victoria on her birthday, 24 May 1848, by the sitter’s mother, the Queen of the Belgians.
