The Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, whose full name was Major-General His Highness Farzand-i-Dilband Rasikh-al-Iqtidad-i-Daulat-i-Inglishia, Raja-i-Rajagan, Maharaja Sir Jagatjit Singh Sahib Bahadur, Maharaja of Kapurthala, succeeded his father, Raja Kharrah Singh, as the ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Kapurthala in the British Empire of India, in 1877, at the age of five. He was invested with full powers in 1890.
An enthusiastic architectural patron and a fine tennis player, he was known amongst other attributes for his immense personal and political loyalty to the British Government. He was one of the three Indian Princes present at the opening of the Imperial Institute, established after the Colonial and Indian Exhibition and now called the Commonwealth Institute. Here, the Maharaja’s uniform is decorated with gold lace and he wears the badge of the Star of India, the Jubilee medal and a star incorporating his own arms.
