Anton Burger (1824-1905) was a pupil of Philipp Veit and and Jacob Becker at the Städel Institute in Frankfurt. He then went on to study at the academies in Munich and Düsseldorf. From 1857, he settled in Kronberg. He painted landscapes and genre scenes of rural life in villages, farms and inns.
In this tribute to Dutch painting of the Golden Age, a young woman, full-length, sits on a chair in a kitchen with a kitten on her lap; in her left hand she holds a feather; a second kitten looks out from a basket at her feet, while a cat sits on the left as another kitten drinks from a bowl.Provenance
Given to Queen Victoria by the Crown Princess of Prussia, 24 May 1871; recorded at Osborne House, 1876
