Wilhelm August Leopold Christian Krause (1803-64)
A View on the Coast Signed and dated 1842
-
Wilhelm August Leopold Christian Krause (1803-1864) studied under CW Kolbe the Elder and Karl Wilhelm Wach. In his late teens he move to Dresden and then to Berlin when he was twenty one. He began to paint seascapes while he was with Wach, before he had actually seen the sea, although he later experienced it on a trip to Norway. In 1842 he travelled to England and Scotland. He joined the Academy in Berlin, in 1832.
In this coastal scene at low tide, a group of fishermen and two women talk next to a grounded fishing boat. In the distance boats under sail can be seen, and there is a church spire on the horizon of the headland to the right.Provenance
Purchased by Queen Victoria, April 1842; recorded at Osborne House, 1876
