August Becker (1822-87)
The Jungfrau signed and dated 1853
-
A view of the Jungfrau, one of the highest mountains in the Swiss Alps. The view is from the north, from a point above Wengen, with the peaks of the Mönch visible on the left and the Silberhorn on the right. A shepherd and cattle are included in the rocky, partly wooded foreground. Having entered the Academy in Düsseldorf in 1840, the landscape painter August Becker embarked on a series of journeys in 1844 to study mountain scenery in Norway, the Tyrol, Switzerland and the Bavarian Alps. This work is signed and dated 1853 and was one of the pictures purchased by Prince Albert in 1854 from the German Gallery; payment of £80 is recorded in his accounts. It was given by the Prince to the Queen and placed in Baron Stockmar’s Sitting-Room at Osborne. A larger version, stated to have been signed and dated 1853, was in the collection of the Prince of Hanover.
