Cooch Behar is in northern India, in the area between Bangladesh, Assam and Bhutan. The Maharani of Cooch Behar, Sunitra Devi was the eldest daughter of Babu Keshab Chandra Sen, a leading religious reformer. She had married the Maharaja, whose portrait by Hall is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 403827), in 1878. The Maharani was received by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on Saturday 16th July 1887, having come to Britain to celebrate the Jubilee. Queen Victoria wrote in her journal entry that day, 'after luncheon, I received the Maharani of Cooch Behar with her 3 Children, who are beautiful.'
