This is an oleograph, or coloured lithograph, with additions of thin oil paint over a photographic print. The work depicts His Highness Shri Maharaja Jaswant Singh, 11th Maharaja of Bharatpur (1851 – 1893). As ruler of the state of Bharatpur in Rajasthan, India, he was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India by Queen Victoria. It is presumed that Queen Victoria acquired this portrait.
The Maharaja is shown seated in a green chair, facing the viewer, with a view of a stone building behind him, possibly the Lohegarh fort in Bharatpur. The photographer is unknown. -
