Anoop Singh and Afzul Khan, whose portrait is also in the Royal Collection (RCIN 403594), were Indian Orderly Officers to the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria’s eldest son. They had come back to England in his entourage. Anoop Singh is depicted in uniform and his medals include those for the Punjab campaign, China 1857-60 and the Indian Mutiny, and the Indian Order of Merit. Hall declared that he was proud of the commission to paint the two men and found the subject congenial and to his taste. The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1877. Signed and dated: S.P. HALL / 1877.
