Risaldar-Major Hukam Singh, Sirdar Bahadur, 16th Bengal Cavalry 1893-97
Oil on canvas | 76.4 x 63.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403593

Hukam Singh is depicted in uniform with the badge of the Order of British India. He was appointed Risaldar-Major (Commander) of his regiment in 1891. The distinction 'Sirdar-Bahadur' roughly equates to the position of a Governor-General or Chief Minister of a province, similar to a British Viceroy. He was one of the soldiers in the Indian contingent which came to England for the Diamond Jubilee. There are a considerable number of pentimenti (changes made by the artist) and the portrait may be unfinished.
