Giuseppe Bottani (Cremona 1717-Mantua 1784)
The Return from Egypt 1763-64
-
Two cherubs scatter flowers in the path of Mary and Joseph as they walk along the road with the young Christ between them holding their hands. The landscape has trees in the foreground and a river with a bridge in the middle ground with mountains beyond; a fortress on a high rock is visible on left. The subject is not uncommon but has no precise Gospel source.
This work forms an obvious pair with RCIN 403554. Both signed by the artist, they are typical examples of Bottani's work, and pay homage to the seventeenth-century landscape tradition of Claude and Gaspar Poussin. In the figures there is apparent some influence of Maratti. Both paintings are in very good condition, and may have been commissioned by Richard Dalton in Rome in 1763-4.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III; recorded in the Council Room at Windsor Castle in 1816
