Patch was a view painter, caricaturist, connoisseur and dealer, who spent his adult life in Italy, appearing prominently in Zoffany’s ‘Tribuna’ (RCIN 406983). This is one of a pair of Arno views (RCIN 403518 and 403534) of identical size and date, one depicting the city by by day and one by night. Here we see Florence, in bright though evening sunlight, from Lungarno Guicciardini looking down Arno to Ponte alla Carraia and across the river to Palazzo Corsini. Groups of figures and coaches are visible on the bridge and in the streets and other figures in numerous rowing boats on the Arno Signed and dated lower centre: T PATCH / 1763
Provenance
Probably purchased by George III in 1764; recorded in the Duke of Cumberland's apartments at St James's Palace in 1819 (no 1087); in the Prince of Wales's Bedroom at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 653)
