Originally this panel had an engaged frame, which has been removed at some point in its history.

There was much debate in the nineteenth century regarding the sitter's identity. It was acknowleded that the sitter was one of the sisters of The Holy Roman Emperor Charles V (the daughters of Philip I and Joanna of Castile), but it was not clear which one. The portrait is now accepted as Isabella of Austria (who became Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden) due to the similarity of the facial features to other portraits of her (for example the portrait by the Master of the Legend of the Magdalene in the National Museum, Krakow).
