Margaret of Austria (1480-1530) c. 1500
-
Margaret of Austria (1480 - 1530) is shown facing to the left, against a blue-green background; she wears a black veil edged with gold and a red dress and a diamond shaped jewel with pendant pearl around her neck. In 1505 Margaret's father, The Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, and her brother Philip the Handsome (Philip I of Castile; see RCIN 403438), attempted to negotiate her marriage to Henry VII, whom she eventually refused. In October 1505 Philip the Handsome paid the Flemish artist Pieter van Coninxloo for a portrait of Margaret which had been taken to England. It seems that the portrait already existed in Coninxloo's workshop, rather than being specially commissioned. It is likely that this is the same portrait.
Provenance
Possibly presented to Henry VII in 1505; probably one of the '31 pictures of Kings and princes' sold for £20 to de la Mare on 28 June 1650 from St James's Palace (no 218); recovered at the Restoration; securely identified as the 'Duchess of Burgundy' in the Queen's Dining Room at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 164)
