Reynolds painted a pair of full-length portraits of the enthroned King and Queen to be shown at the first Royal Academy exhibition to take place at Somerset House in 1780; the originals are still at the Royal Academy.
This is one of a pair of copies of these portraits (OM 1033-4, 403264 and 403266), which were presented by George III to the 3rd Duke of Montrose and presented by the 6th Duke of Montrose to George VI.
The Queen is seated under a canopy, in robes of state, wearing a small crown; her sceptre lies on a cushion in front of her.Provenance
