Sir Peter Lely (1618-80)
James VII & II (1633-1701) when Duke of York c. 1665
-
Three-quarter-length portrait of James VII & II (1633-1701) when Duke of York, standing, facing three-quarters to the left, his head turned to the front, wearing armour, holding a baton in his right hand, and resting his left hand on his hip. This portrait was apparently left unfinished by Lely who finished the head, hair and cravat, while the rest of the design was probably completed by another hand at a slightly later date.
Provenance
First recorded amongst James II's pictures in a wardrobe at St James's Palace as unfinished (no 1190); in store at Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 48); moved to Somerset House in 1714; on the King's Stair at Kensington in 1720; in the Privy Chamber at Kensington in 1732; in the Queen's Dressing Room at Buckingham Palace in 1790; still here in 1819, though now called the Blue Velvet Room, it appears in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences in that year (RCIN 922144); it hung as a pair with RCIN 405508 in St James Palace in 1864
