"Marco" on the Breakfast Table 1893
-
A brown sable Pomeranian, Marco, stands on the Queen's breakfast table at Windsor. On the table are her breakfast things, a letter addressed to her, and a bunch of violets and primroses. From the pictures by Winterhalter seen hanging behind, it is clear that the breakfast table has been laid in the Queen's Sitting-Room at Windsor. The dog had been brought by Queen Victoria from Florence in 1888.
Painted for the Queen, who saw the picture, before it was completed, on 15 December 1892. Barber was paid £66 4s 6d for the picture on 1 June 1893. The picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1893.Provenance
