Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-73)
Brazilian Marmosets 1842
Royal Collection Trust/© His Majesty King Charles III 2024. Photographer: Mike Davidson
-
This painting depicts two Brazilian marmosets on a pineapple, gazing at a wasp. Queen Victoria described them as ‘my little Monkeys’. Landseer's animal paintings often seem to include an element of comedy in imitation of human life: in this case he may be wishing to suggest that these two marmosets used to the dangers of the rain-forest seem absurdly terrified by an English wasp. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1842. Inscribed on the back with the name of the artist and the subject.
