An Old Woman Asleep in a Chair c.1625-35
-
This small panel is in the style of an early Gerrit Dou (of the 1630s), with a suggestion of the spiritual homeliness of Rembrandt's treatment of the Old Testament story of Tobit and Anna. We see an old woman who has fallen asleep while reading a large book (presumably the Bible), which lies open on her lap. A spinning wheel at her side perhaps suggests that a hard day's work has brought on her fatique. Behind appears a fireplace with a hanging birdcage.
