Rubens painted an altarpiece of this subject in c. 1615 for St John’s church in van Diepenbeeck’s home town of ‘s-Hertogensbosch (now at Pommersfelden). This oil sketch substantially simplifies and somewhat alters Rubens’s composition and is characteristic of Van Diepenbeeck’s work of c. 1630. It would be tempting to suggest that this is a sketch for an engraving freely adapted Rubens’s paintings (something Diepenbeeck did), but unfortunately no such print survives.
