A reduced copy of a portrait of Charles II of c.1665 presumably by Lely. Versions are at Longleat, Gorhambury and Tyninghame. The Royal Collection portrait is painted in the manner of van Leemput, although it was attributed to Theodore Russell from the middle of the eighteenth century
Provenance
First recorded, with its pair (RCIN 402976) and the set of Remigius 'Beauties', in the Bathing Room at Windsor Castle in 1710 (no 190) and again in 1720 and 1733; the pair are moved to the King's Dressing Room at Windsor by 1776, where they remain until 1819
