One of the greatest and most humane monarchs in the history of Europe is shown here in the year of his assassination.
It is possible that contemporaries would have seen in his noble brow, wide face, flowing beard and moustache and swept back hair the characteristics of a Leonine (or lion-like) physiognomy. This was a universally accepted way of showing (and recognising) the virtues of courage and magnanimity.Provenance
