After Titian (c. 1488-Venice 1576)
The Virgin and Child with Saints Dorothy and George c. 1515-35
-
A group portrait of half-length figures; seated at the right is the Virgin, facing half to the left and holding the Christ Child on her lap. To the left of them is Saint Dororthy, who is offering a wreath of flowers to Christ, and behind her is Saint George, in armour with a stave.
This is a good quality copy after an original by Titian of 1515-8 (Prado, Madrid). There is significant variation only in the pose of the Christ Child. The saints in the Royal Collection picture have been identified in most modern literature as Bridget and her husband Ulpho or Hulfus. However, the male saint in the original was called Saint George in 1593 and in seventeenth-century inventories; in the latter the female saint is called Catherine, but a basket of flowers is the attribute of Saint Dorothy.Provenance
Probably acquired by Charles I and sold from Somerset House to Edmund Harrison and others for £80 on 23 October 1651 (no 107); certainly the work attributed to Giorgione in Store at Whitehall in 1666 (no 474)
