Soldiers on the March c.1650-80
-
On the slope of a hill, graduating up to a tree on the left. A mounted figure in red holding a trumpet in his right hand, a banner extending from it. To the left a figure on a white horse. Troops assembling on the right.
Provenance
This and its pair (RCIN 402986) seem to have formed part of the Consul Smith Collection acquired by George III in 1762 (Italian List nos 246-7), though this one has a Queen Anne style frame unusual for this source. The pair are recorded at St james's Palace from whence they are transferred to Buckingham palace, where they appear in 1819; by 1861 they had found their way to the Queen's Gallery, Hampton Court.
