Sir John Leman (1544-1632) Dated 1616
Oil on canvas | 125.7 x 107.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402823
-
Three-quarter-length portrait of Sir John Leman (1544-1632), turned slightly to the left, looking to the viewer, wearing the red, fur-lined robes of an Alderman of the City of London, with the Lord Mayor's chair behind, to the left, upon the arm of which he rests his right hand.
The sitter was a member of the Fishmongers' Company, and Alderman (1605), Sheriff (1606) and Lord Mayor (1616-17) of London. This portrait was probably painted to commemorate his appointment to Lord Mayor on 29 October 1616.Provenance
Possibly one of a group of historical portraits acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the Privy Chamber (also called Queen's Caroline's Drawing Room) at Kensington Palace in 1818 as Federico Zuccaro (no 70), where it appears in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (RCIN 922151).
