Sir John Gage is shown wearing Gater robes, with the royal arms embroidered on a banner behind him. The sitter was a statesman and military commander, occupying a number of roles in the Royal Household including Vice-Chamberlain (1528) and Comptroller of the Household (1540) to Henry VIII and Captain of the royal guard and Lord Chamberlain (1553) to Mary I. The white staff held in his right hand could refer to any of these three royal offices but probably refers to the position of Lord Chamberlain.
