Landscape with a River c.1780-1820
Oil on canvas | 43.0 x 56.2 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402768

Ibbetson specialised in the mountainous scenery of Wales and the Lake District. These two landscapes (RCIN 402754 and 402768, presumably a pair) are close in style to his late work, though not of sufficient quality to make possible a confident attribution. A river flowing between wooded banks; a group of men are hauling a tree across the river below a waterfall, watched by two woman lower right. The men appear to be wearing kilts or some form of medieval costume, suggesting that this scene illustrates the kind of heroic saga popular in the Romantic period.
