A Perspective View of Buildings with Figures c.1620-70
Oil on canvas | 146.5 x 114.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402713
-
A perspective of classical buildings set against a checkboard pattern piazza, populated with oriental figures; the nearest building is fitted with a demi-lunette covered porch; the loggia behind with a cupola flanked by a pair of obelisks. Previously attributed to Ghisolfi, and presumably the picture bought by Dalton in Rome, the work is of poor quality and is nearer in style to Codazzi, who specialized in perspective views.
Provenance
Acquired by George III; among the disbursements by Dalton in Rome for George III was 150 Roman crowns for 'A large picture of Architecture & figs by Ghisolfi'; recorded as Ghisolfi in the Passage at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 602)
