The Last Supper c.1580
-
Christ sits in the centre, with the apostles grouped along the table. Five are on the left and seven are on the right, with Judas on the near side of the table. In addition, there is a servant at each end. On the table are four prominent candles, with traces of gold remaining on the raised gesso of the candle flames.
The hard finish and coppery highlights in this painting suggest that it is Netherlandish. The attribution with which it was acquired, to Gilles Coignet, may well be correct. Coignet is not a well-studied artist but he is known as a copier of Titian and a competent figure-painter, whereas this artist is most successful with still life.Provenance
Acquired by Charles II in 1660 for £15 from William Frizell at Breda (List II no 40) as Gillis Gogniet; recorded in the King's Dressing Room at Hampton Court in 1666 (no 33)
